The Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Service, through the Mombasa County Blood Transfusion Coordinator Mr. Keith Ziroh, awarded the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) a Certificate of Recognition for its outstanding contribution to saving lives through voluntary blood donation. In February 2025, TUM successfully mobilized staff and students to donate 250 units of blood, a significant boost to the Centre’s monthly target of 2,000 units, of which 60% is sourced from educational institutions.
The certificate, signed by Dr. Wakwabubi, Ag. Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Service, affirms TUM’s enduring commitment to health-related community service. For years, the university has supported life-saving initiatives through strategic partnerships and sustained campus-wide campaigns. Central to these efforts is the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences under the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, led by Mr. Nyarambe Wigina, which has played a pivotal role in organizing and sustaining the donation drives.
Moving forward, the university plans to institutionalize bi-annual blood drives, reinforcing its role as a proactive partner in regional healthcare delivery.
Such initiatives are crucial in supporting public health systems, particularly during emergencies or for patients requiring regular transfusions. More than just a donation of blood, these efforts symbolize TUM’s deep-rooted culture of compassion, civic responsibility, and community service; values that continue to define its identity.
