Welcome to Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) TVET Institute. We are situated at the port city of Mombasa within the Technical University of Mombasa. TUM TVET Institute was launched in 2016 through a University Council resolution that saw the Directorate of TVET transformed into an Institute mandated to coordinate the admission of all Diploma and Certificate students among others. TUM TVET Institute is fully accredited by the Technical Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), Ministry of Education to provide training in Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in various courses at Diploma and Certificate levels. TUM TVET Institute endeavors to offer skill based training in line with the goal of employment creation as well as wealth creation through application of Science, Technology and Innovation. Our curriculum implementation model takes cognizance of the needs of industry by giving the trainees intensive hands-on training in their particular trade areas and also a mandatory industrial attachment. ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

Welcome to the department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The department offers the Diploma in Technology in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with four specialization tracks namely Electrical Power, Instrumentation and Control, Electronics, and Telecommunications Engineering. This programme is examined by TUM. This programme aims to produce graduates that are ready for the job market and are capable of identifying, formulating and solving complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science and mathematics. This is achieved through the deliberately crafted teaching and learning atmosphere that is geared towards experiential learning with emphasis on the practical aspect of engineering. COMMUNIATION STUDIES

The Department of Communication Studies is committed to training personnel for the media industry in all its spheres including electronic and the print media. The programmes in the department are designed to equip students with practical skills in journalism which are relevant in Kenya and global labor markets. It imparts professional skills and attitudes to persons whose interest is to work in the industry of Mass Media. The department aims to produce competent all rounded communication practitioners who confidently articulate issues in mass communication, public relations and journalism. To this end the programmes are so designed to create a balance between theoretical groundings of the course as well as a grasp of what is currently the practice in mass communication. All our programmes stress the cardinal role of ethical conduct as well as professional practice in the discipline which are both necessary and sufficient conditions for a changed practice in Africa. INSTITUTE OF COMPUTING AND INFORMATICS

The Institute of Computing and informatics offers Information Communication Technology (ICT) training to provide innovative lifelong opportunities. The Institute aims to help students develop the necessary skills to exploit ICT, to become independent users of ICT and to be ICT professionals who meet the demands of both local and global markets. ICT encompasses the fields of Data/Information processing, transmission and communications by means of computer and telecommunication techniques. ICT tools are increasingly used for organizational/personal information processing in all sectors of economy and society. The goal of the Department of Social Sciences is to produce qualified social workers to the standard required by the local communities and Kenya at large with appropriate skills, knowledge and attitude in social and community work. It offers programmes that are key to society’s transformation through linking them with systems that provide them with resources, services and opportunities, develop and improve social policy and promote human and community wellbeing. The programmes on offer exposes the students to interdisciplinary frameworks which incorporates concepts and approaches from interrelated disciplines namely; social work, project management, entrepreneurship and innovation, public governance, conflict management and counseling. Business Studies helps an individual to make more informed decisions in the everyday business of living. It gives one a better understanding of the world of work and encourages him/her to think about how and why people start up in business. ACCOUNTANCY AND FINANCE

The Department of Accounting and Finance ensures that students are competent enough, both theoretically as well as practically, to undertake the recording, preparing, analyzing and reporting financial transactions of an organization. The importance of the role of professional accountants in business in ensuring the quality of financial reporting cannot be overly emphasized. The purpose of financial accounting is to provide the information that is needed for sound economic decision-making. The main purpose of financial accounting is to prepare financial reports that provide information about a firm's performance to external parties such as investors, creditors, and tax authorities. Financial accounting is a specialized branch of accounting that keeps track of a company's financial transactions. Using standardized guidelines, the transactions are recorded, summarized, and presented in a financial report (Statement of profit or loss and other comprehensive income) or financial statement (Statement of Financial Position).

ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH SCIENCES

Environmental sciences primarily focuses on the air we breathe; the water we drink; the land we build on and the homes we live in… numerous elements of our natural and man-made environment have the potential to affect our health. Our complex interactions with the environment and physical surroundings influence our genetics and health. The relationships we have with the environment can give rise to a variety of diseases and health conditions – including asthma, cancer, and food poisoning. Environmental health sciences professionals focus on identifying the relationships and risks of the physical environment around us on our health. They actively try to improve the public’s health addressing these environmental risk factors and putting in a concerted effort to mitigate the risks around us.

This is a wide-ranging, complex, and multifaceted profession, spanning chemistry, toxicology and engineering, among many other disciplines.  Like all public health fields, it also involves collaboration with and reliance upon other professionals, including chemists, geologists, biologists, meteorologists, physicists, physicians, engineers, human resources representatives, and even politicians. When working in an environmental health science field you will be immersed in a “big picture” perspective of how environment and actions heavily affect our daily health.
