The Technical University of Mombasa has a history of seafarer training. At its inception as Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME), it offered training in technical programmes including seamanship and navigation. The Institute has been established as part of the University’s vision to be a premier maritime university of global excellence. Over the years, the Technical University of Mombasa has expanded its maritime education offerings, staying true to its foundational goals while adapting to the evolving needs of the maritime industry. The Institute now provides a diverse range of courses that cater to various aspects of maritime and seafaring studies. These include advanced programs in nautical science, marine engineering, port management, commercial shipping, maritime law, maritime safety and security, maritime policy and governance, seafarer competency training and logistics. Our curricula are designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring they are well prepared to meet the demands of the modern maritime sector. The university's strategic location along the coastline is an added advantage, offering students direct access to a real-world maritime environment where they can engage in hands-on learning experiences.
