Mombasa, Kenya – On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, students, industry leaders, and engineers gathered at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) to celebrate World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. The event, themed "Shaping Our Sustainable Future Through Engineering," kicked off with an engineering-themed walk from Pembe za Ndovu to TUM, aiming to raise awareness about the important contributions of engineers to sustainable development. It was organized by the Institution of Engineers Kenya (IEK) in collaboration with the Engineering Students Association (ESA) of TUM.

The event was well attended by students and faculty members, including Dr. Sameer Bachani (Dean School of Engineering), Prof. Abed, Prof. Onchiri, Eng. Kuta (Chairman of Department of Civil Engineering), Eng. Mkare, Abdulaziz, Bibiye Mahmud and many others.

Mentorship and Knowledge Transfer

The event kicked off by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Leila Abubakar, who emphasized the importance of students engaging with professionals and networking to facilitate a smooth transition into the industry. In line with the event's theme, she also advised students to focus on creating sustainable solutions for the future.

Hon. Daniel Manyala, the CEC Department of Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, Mombasa, reiterated the government's commitment to offering partnerships through internships, attachments and eventual employment to the young engineers.

Participants then engaged in a reflective mentorship program under the guidance of senior engineers such as Eng. Otieno Arowo, Eng. Annasacia Maina, Eng. Albert Onyango, and Patrick Warui (IET Chair, Mombasa). Eng. Otieno Arowo discussed the significance of exposure and international opportunities in engineering, encouraging students to seek global exposure to broaden their skill sets. Thomas Opiyo, meanwhile, stressed job security and the importance of proper equipment handling for safety and efficiency.

Empowering the Next Generation

The ceremony also facilitated student registration, courtesy of IEK officials from the Mombasa Branch, enabling young engineers to join professional networks for career growth and mentorship. The day concluded with a tree-planting exercise, reflecting the engineers' commitment to environmental sustainability. Participants enjoyed refreshments and engaged in networking sessions, further strengthening connections within the engineering community.

The vote of thanks was given by Clinton Mokaya, Chair of ESA TUM, who introduced his team of executives and the student faculty representatives who were present.

A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

World Engineering Day 2025 at TUM effectively reaffirmed the crucial role of engineering in shaping a sustainable future. By fostering knowledge transfer, providing professional guidance, and promoting environmental sustainability, the event empowered the next generation of engineers to drive positive change in society.
