Earlier today, the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) extended a warm welcome to a delegation from the Korea Institute of Maritime & Fisheries Technology (KIMFT), led by Professor Jinsoo Park. The delegation paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laila Abubakar, and was received with a ceremonial guard of honour. Also present were representatives from the Maritime Education and Training Support Center for Kenya (METSC), the State Department of Shipping and Maritime Affairs, and the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, representing Cabinet Secretary Hon. Hassan Ali Joho.

The delegation will be present at TUM throughout the week as part of a joint Korea-Kenya initiative to implement an advanced maritime education and training system. The partnership is hosted in the Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies. The program aims to address the global shortage of seafarers, enhance sea-time opportunities for Kenyan cadets, and promote sustainable development in East Africa through capacity building and training sessions. As part of this effort, KIMFT will assess the quality of maritime curricula and training programs in Kenyan institutions, ensuring they align with international standards.

This engagement is particularly beneficial for TUM, as it provides an opportunity to enhance its maritime education offerings through international collaboration. By aligning its programs with global standards and incorporating best practices from KIMFT, TUM aims to strengthen its position as a leading maritime training institution in the region, better preparing its graduates for both local and international maritime industry demands.
