The Seafarers training program at Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has received a major boost, after the Institution received equipment worth half a million shillings from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on Thursday June 22, 2023.
The equipment was comprised of five hp new model laptops, multi-purpose hp LaserJet colour photocopier machine, video projector, four work station legged Desks, three complete book units with glass wooden sliding doors and three office tables.
Addressing the TUM family after inspecting the marine engineers guard of honour, TUM Vice chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar commended TUM staff who have utilized their networks to secure facilities from institutions of goodwill.
She encouraged the staff to remain pro-active in such ventures, and particularly commended the TUM head of Maritime Training Captain Twalib Mohammed for spearheading the process.
Captain Twalib has disclosed that TUM currently offers 36 different short courses in the maritime industry. They include:
Basic safety Courses
These include Personal Survival Techniques, Fire prevention and Firefighting, Elementary first Aid, Personal safety and social responsibilities.
Security Courses
These include Security Awareness Training, Seafarers with Designated Security Duties, Ship Security Officers, Company Security Officers
Medical First Courses
These include Medical First Aid and Medical Care.
Tanker Courses
These are two namely Basic Training for oil and chemical Tanker Cargo Operations; and Basic Training for liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations.
Advanced Courses
These include Advanced Training for oil Tanker Cargo Operations, Advanced Training for Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations, Electronic Chart Display and information System Operational level, Electronic chart Display and Information System Management, and High Voltage Operational level.
They also include High Voltage Management level, Navigation Aids Equipment and Simulator Training Operational level, Navigation Aids Equipment and simulator Training Management level, Able seafarer Engine, Advanced Marine Engineering STCW, and Advanced Nautical Sciences STCW.
According to Captain Twalib, TUM is the only institution in Kenya offering advanced Seafarers courses.
He revealed that the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Academics, Research and Extension Prof. Peter Gichangi, who is a medical Doctor by profession, has been approved by the IMO to assess the medical status of seafarers.
This development, he said, makes TUM to be the only institution in Kenya to have its own medical Doctor to deal with seafarers.
