The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) recently welcomed a monitoring and evaluation audit conducted by officials from the Ministry of Education. The focus of the audit was to assess the University's infrastructure and academic environment. The exercise was led by Ms Christine Kariuki, Deputy Director of Research within the Directorate of Research, Science and Technology, under the State Department for Higher Education and Research.

The audit highlighted a number of commendable achievements, reflecting TUM’s steadfast commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community service. The institution was particularly recognised for its judicious utilisation of limited government funding alongside internally generated income, which has facilitated notable expansion of its infrastructure and supported the increasing student population.

Of particular note was the team’s commendation of the University’s well-equipped laboratories and engineering workshops, which play a vital role in providing students with hands-on, practical learning experiences. In addition, TUM’s investment in solar-powered infrastructure was applauded as a sustainable and forward-thinking initiative. This development not only advances the institution’s environmental sustainability agenda but also contributes to a reduction in operational costs, thereby enabling the redirection of resources towards further academic and infrastructural development.

The Ministry expressed its commitment to supporting TUM’s continued growth, particularly with respect to infrastructure development. A specific focus was placed on the forthcoming healthcare facility, which aligns with the establishment of the new School of Medicine. The audit team further acknowledged the quality and strategic importance of the University’s library services as central to academic success.

The auditors observed that TUM has adopted a comprehensive framework of operational policies that underpin sound management and governance across its departments. The University’s vibrant culture of research and community engagement received significant praise, with special mention of the internal research funding mechanisms that support staff scholarly activities.

In summary, the audit reflected a highly positive evaluation of the University’s performance. It recognised TUM’s resilience, resourcefulness, and dedication to delivering high-quality education and service. Through continued strategic investment and its sustained commitment to community engagement, TUM is well-positioned to consolidate its status as a regional and national leader in higher education.
