The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) today welcomed hundreds of new students for the August 2026 intake, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their academic and professional journeys.
The University came alive early in the morning as new students arrived alongside their parents and guardians, many of whom had travelled long distances to witness this important milestone. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, anticipation and pride as families watched their sons and daughters take their first steps into university life.
The registration exercise began at 6:30 am and progressed swiftly, with University staff across various departments working together to receive, guide and assist students and their parents through the different stages of admission and registration. From the first point of contact, students were warmly welcomed and directed to the relevant departments, where staff provided the information and support needed to complete the process.
For parents and guardians, the smooth and well-coordinated exercise offered reassurance that their children had joined an institution prepared to support them throughout their university journey.
For the students, however, the day represented much more than completing registration requirements. It marked the beginning of a journey filled with new opportunities, friendships, responsibilities and the promise of a future shaped by knowledge and skills.
Behind the hundreds of students who arrived at TUM today were individual stories of determination, sacrifice, resilience and hope.
For some families, the journey to university has been years in the making. For others, the moment represents the culmination of significant personal and family challenges. Yet, regardless of where they came from, the new students arrived at TUM united by a common ambition to pursue higher education and build a better future.
Among the parents accompanying their children was Millicent Atieno from Kajiado County, whose journey to TUM carried a poignant story of loss, resilience and renewed hope.
Millicent had previously supported another of her children through university, watching with pride as the student progressed towards the final stages of the academic journey. After years of sacrifice and encouragement, the family looked forward to celebrating graduation.
However, just months before that long-awaited milestone, tragedy struck and her child passed away earlier this year in May. The loss was devastating, particularly after years of watching and supporting the academic journey.
Today, Millicent returned to the University with another child. She brought her son to TUM to pursue an Engineering course, carrying with her renewed hope and the belief that education can continue to transform the lives of her family.
While Millicent's story reflects resilience in the face of loss, for some of the new students, joining TUM represented the fulfilment of a long-held dream.
Among them was David M., from Mwaishimba in Taita Taveta County. For David, today's admission carries significance beyond his personal achievement. He is the first person from his village to join university, making his admission a source of pride for both his family and community.
For years, David had worked towards the goal of pursuing university education. TUM was his university of choice, and receiving admission to the institution represented the fulfilment of a long-held aspiration.
Arriving at the University today, David was filled with excitement as he prepared to begin a new phase of his life. He looks forward to gaining new knowledge and skills, meeting new people, embracing university life and making the most of the opportunities available at TUM.
The August 2026 registration exercise brought together students from diverse backgrounds and counties, each arriving with unique experiences, dreams and ambitions. Their stories reflected the different paths that had brought them to TUM, but also a shared determination to pursue education and create opportunities for themselves and their families.
Parents and guardians also appreciated the support provided by University staff, with the well-coordinated process giving them confidence that their children had joined an institution committed to their academic and personal development.
As the August 2026 intake gets underway, TUM continues to welcome and register newly admitted students. The registration exercise will continue until 28th August 2026, giving students who have yet to complete the process an opportunity to report, register and officially begin their journey at the Technical University of Mombasa.
