The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare by hosting a comprehensive wellness day that placed preventive healthcare in the spotlight through free, on-site medical check-ups and medical insurance sensitization.
Held on Wednesday at the Assembly Hall and organized by the Department of Human Resource, the initiative provided staff with an opportunity to access essential health services while gaining a better understanding of their medical insurance coverage.
The event transformed the Assembly Hall into a vibrant health hub, with staff benefiting from general health assessments provided by Pandya Memorial Hospital, including blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, BMI analysis and personalised physician consultations. Vijay Optica conducted vision screenings, including refraction tests, while the Social Health Authority (SHA) provided on-the-spot registration guidance and consultations on available government primary healthcare packages.
First Assurance also conducted a medical insurance sensitization session, providing staff with information on their medical cover, available benefits and how to make the most of their insurance. Staff had an opportunity to engage with the insurer’s representatives, seek clarification on various aspects of their coverage and better understand the healthcare services accessible to them.
In her address, TUM Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laila Abubakar, underscored the importance of proactive healthcare, noting that regular access to health services enables individuals to make informed decisions that contribute to a better quality of life and a more productive workforce.
“Initiatives that bridge the gap between our staff and essential health services are not just beneficial, they are essential. A healthy workforce is the backbone of a thriving institution, and by bringing these free check-ups directly to our staff, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where wellbeing is a lived reality, not just a policy,” stated Prof. Laila Abubakar.
The wellness day underscored TUM’s continued commitment to supporting a healthy workforce by making preventive healthcare, health information and essential medical services more accessible to its staff.
