The Technical University for Mombasa provided its first international training in Zanzibar from January 22nd to January 25th, 2024. Capt. Talib Mohammed, in charge of Maritime Education and Training at the University, led the specialized training for the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, which was delivered to the personnel of Fumba Port. The training was extended by Fumba Ports Limited to all government agencies working inside the port. This training is mandatory for port personnel, and it is a requirement for the port to be issued with the Certificate of Compliance for the Facility. The training included Port Facility Security Awareness Training for all port personnel, Port Facility Security training for port personnel with designated duties, and Port Facility Security Officer Training.

The training for the Port Facility Security Officers (PFSO) also included practical training sessions on Port Facility Security Inspections, Security Risk Assessments, Security Drills and Exercises, in addition to the implementation and review of the Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP). The management of Fumba Port, led by the Terminal Manager, Mr Peter Mujomba, and the HR & Administration Manager, Ms Zamzam Mwinyi, praised the University’s training and reiterated their confidence in the University’s Maritime Education and Training Quality. The management further emphasized the importance of the partnership between the University and Fumba Ports.

During the closing session, the training was reviewed, and the proficiency of the Port Personnel was assessed at different levels of training. All the trainees demonstrated adeptness and competence in their specific roles. 

The International Ship and Port Facility Security Training is also available locally at the three levels as per the International Maritime Organization MSC.1/Circular.1188 and MSC.1/Circular.1341.
