The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) is on the right track in adhering to ISO 9001:2015 Standards, auditors have confirmed.

Addressing the TUM fraternity after the completion of the second surveillance audit,  conducted from 27th to 30th January 2026, SGS lead auditor Jared Ogutu stated that no major non-conformities were found. Therefore, TUM will continue to be ISO 9001:2015 Certified.

Ogutu commended the entire TUM team for showing commitment towards ISO requirements. “I am very impressed by the support I received from all the auditees. This shows that TUM is very committed to ISO 9001:2015 Certification and the surveillance audits," Ogutu said.

The lead auditor said the key objectives were to determine conformity of management systems, to ensure regulatory and contractual requirements are met and to identify potential areas for improvement.

The certification scope was design, development and delivery of teaching, learning, research and community service, covering all academic departments and services.

Although there were no major non conformities raised, Mr Ogutu nevertheless highlighted seven minor corrective actions from various departments that were audited and need to be rectified in 90 days.

During the entry meeting for the surveillance audit, Vice Chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar said the ISO 9001:2015 certification has helped the institution to get grants from international organizations. She urged all staff to adhere to the standards so as to sustain quality services to the clients.

In his speech, Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration, Finance and Planning Prof Joseph Rasowo promised the lead auditor that the seven minor observations identified will be corrected in the required time.

The sentiments were echoed by deputy vice chancellor in charge of academic research and extension Prof Peter Gichangi who said the exercise was done by sampling, urging those who were not audited to take note on the issues raised since they cut across all the departments.

Also present in the event was the TUM director of Quality Assurance Dr Sylvia Mutua, who commended the TUM family for the good audit results.

Dr Silvia said: “Dear process owners, thank you all for the great teamwork during this ISO 9001:2015 surveillance audit, we concluded the audit with no major non conformities, which reflects your commitment and ownership of your processes.

She thanked the management for the continued support
