On March 20th, 2024, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laila Abubakar, paid a courtesy call to the Kenya Ports Authority Harbour Master's Office where she was welcomed by Capt. Ali Abdille. The purpose of Prof. Laila's visit was to discuss collaboration between the Marine Pilots as highly specialized maritime practitioners. Among the deliberations were the industry approval and recognition of the Bachelor's Degree in Nautical Science.

Following the visit, a stakeholder session was hosted by the Harbour to discuss the curriculum for the BSC in Nautical Science, which was subsequently accepted by both the Association of Marine Pilots Kenya and the Association of Maritime Practitioners Kenya. The stakeholders lauded the University for taking bold steps to ensure quality in Maritime Education and Training (MET). The degree program, being the first of its kind in the country, has been hailed as a trailblazer.

During the discussion, the framework for the establishment of the Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies was also discussed, and stakeholder input was adopted for implementation. Both Associations reiterated their commitment to enhancing the quality of MET in the University by availing their members, who are highly qualified in different areas. This move will enhance the capacity of our country to effectively tap into the Blue Economy and Maritime sectors by enhancing the skill set locally.
