TUM, Constanta Maritime University sign landmark MoU to advance maritime education

The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), through its Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies (IMSS), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Constanta Maritime University (CMU), Romania, to strengthen international collaboration in maritime education, research, innovation and professional seafarer training.

The agreement marks a significant milestone in expanding academic and professional opportunities for students, cadets, seafarers and researchers from both institutions, while strengthening cooperation between Kenya and Romania in the maritime sector.

The Romanian delegation was led by the Romanian Ambassador to Kenya and included Prof. Gabriel Raicu, Rector of Constanta Maritime University; Radu Hanzu, Vice-Rector; Nicu Iancu, Vice-President; Anca Sirbu, Head of International Relations; and Peter W. Orifah, Cyber Security International Liaison.

Through the partnership, the two institutions will promote knowledge exchange, strengthen maritime competencies and contribute to developing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the evolving demands of the global maritime industry.

The MoU provides for collaboration in student and faculty exchanges, cadet development programmes, professional training, and joint seminars and workshops. It also creates opportunities for seafarers to access continuous professional development programmes aligned with changing industry needs and international standards.

Another key area of cooperation is the development of joint academic programmes and curricula. The universities will explore opportunities for collaborative undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, professional certification courses and innovative teaching approaches that integrate emerging maritime technologies and international best practices.

The agreement also establishes a framework for joint research and development, with priority areas including maritime transport, port and logistics management, marine engineering, maritime safety and security, environmental sustainability and the blue economy. Researchers from both institutions will have opportunities to undertake collaborative studies, publish joint research, participate in international conferences and pursue research funding opportunities.

Speaking on the significance of the partnership, TUM Vice-Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar and CMU Rector Prof. Gabriel Raicu underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities in the maritime sector. They highlighted the value of sharing expertise, resources and innovative approaches in advancing maritime education and supporting sustainable growth in the global maritime industry.

Beyond academic collaboration, the partnership is expected to strengthen institutional and professional networks, facilitate cultural exchange and enhance engagement with maritime industry stakeholders. By bringing together the expertise and resources of both universities, the collaboration seeks to prepare graduates and maritime professionals for the demands of an increasingly interconnected maritime industry.

The MoU reflects the shared commitment of TUM and CMU to advancing excellence in maritime education, professional capacity building, research and international academic cooperation. Both institutions will now work towards translating the agreement into practical programmes and initiatives that deliver lasting benefits to students, cadets, seafarers, researchers and the wider maritime community.
