Why study with us
The Technical University of Mombasa has a history of providing seafarer training. At its founding, the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME) provided technical instruction such as seamanship and navigation. This is visible in the existing infrastructure, which includes the Nautical Block and the Boathouse. The Nautical block's façade is supposed to resemble the facade of a ship's bridge. Other facts and proof include an existent office known as the Botswain's Office. All of this indicates a strong link between the University and Maritime Education and Training.
The Institute has been established as part of the University’s vision to be a maritime university of global excellence. Maritime training is a comprehensive educational pathway designed to prepare individuals for careers in the maritime industry. It encompasses a variety of programs and courses that focus on the skills and knowledge necessary for navigating and operating vessels at sea, as well as managing maritime operations.
Over the years, the Technical University of Mombasa has expanded its maritime education offerings, staying true to its foundational goals while adapting to the evolving needs of the maritime industry. The Institute now provides a diverse range of courses that cater to various aspects of maritime and seafaring studies. These include advanced programs in nautical science, marine engineering, port management, commercial shipping, maritime law, maritime safety and security, maritime policy and governance, seafarer competency training and logistics.
The Institute has four sections including:
Nautical Science,
Marine and Electro-Technical Engineering,
Maritime Management and
Seafarer Competency Studies.
The four sections represent the core of the maritime industry.
