As an institution that has witnessed the evolution of time, TUM has also had the privilege of walking alongside academic giants. Today, the TUM Senate celebrated one of its own, Professor Justin Irina, as he retires after 15 years of distinguished service.

Prof. Irina spent his golden years at TUM contributing immensely to teaching, research, and curriculum development. A respected Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, he also held key leadership roles, including Director of the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Chair of the Board of Governors during the Mombasa Polytechnic era.

In an exclusive interview, Prof. Irina shared that his fondest memories were mentoring both staff and students at the School of Applied and Health Sciences, as well as the camaraderie shared with colleagues, moments he will truly miss.

As he bid farewell to his colleagues, now considered family, Prof. Irina emphasized the importance of developing a Nuclear Technology curriculum, calling it both timely and necessary. He also championed what he termed the "C&C method," Competition and Collaboration, urging institutions to work together and share resources, even with competitors.

Beyond his role at TUM, Prof. Irina’s legacy stretches far and wide. He has served as Chancellor of Murang'a University, Vice Chancellor of Moi University, and as a professor in various institutions of higher learning. His public service record includes membership in several national boards, and in 1994, he was honoured by the President of Kenya with the prestigious Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) award.

As he enters retirement, the TUM fraternity, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar, presented Prof. Irina with a service appreciation award in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the university and the community at large.
