Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) will partner with Vrije University of Brussels to strengthen her marine and maritime programmes.

The two Institutions are working on strategies for exchange programs which will involve staff and students.

Addressing the University management and representatives of Marine Programmes, and stakeholders at the TUM conference hall, the coordinator of Inter-University Master’s Programme in Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management (Oceans and Lakes), Dr. Karolien Van Puyvelde said Ocean and Lakes is already a joint programme on aquatic systems in Belgium. She said at the moment three universities, Vrije University Brussel, University of Antwerpen and University of Gent have brought together their expertise to enhance their programmes.

Dr. Van Puyvelde said, “The on-going programmes integrate physical, chemical, geological, ecological, legislative and societal aspects and encourage students to also consider conservational and sustainability features”.

Further she said, “Students are provided with strong fundamental and applied knowledge. They are prepared for an active role in the scientific research and management of marine and lacustrine systems.’’ Technical University of Mombasa Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar echoed the sentiments adding that the exchange will expose TUM students to the marine world.

Prof. Abubakar called on students in Kenya and East Africa to take maritime studies serious as the country is moving towards blue economy.

Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Research and Extension Prof. Peter Gichangi requested the Belgium delegation to help TUM in infrastructure development by provision of the latest teaching facilities to make learning more effective.

In his plea, Prof Gichangi urged the Belgium delegation to provide key note speakers that can address fundamental issues on Blue Ecomony.
