The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) fraternity is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Elvis "Beast" Otieno, a distinguished alumnus, former President of the Technical University of Mombasa Students Association (TUMSA), an exceptional student leader, mentor and friend whose life was defined by selfless service, compassionate leadership and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others.

His passing has left a profound void within the University community. What makes this loss even more poignant is that, only hours before his demise, Beast was at the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Dean of Students advocating for a fellow student who faced the possibility of missing examinations due to outstanding fee balances. Having already secured a sponsor to support the student financially, he was pursuing every available avenue to ensure the student would be allowed to sit for the examinations. In what would become one of his final acts, Beast was not pursuing a personal interest but standing in the gap for another. It was a fitting reflection of the life he lived, a life dedicated to serving others.

Elvis joined the Technical University of Mombasa as a Diploma student pursuing Procurement before advancing to pursue a Bachelor's degree in the School of Business, from which he graduated in 2025. His passion for leadership and student representation became evident early in his academic journey. In 2023, he was elected as a Delegate representing the School of Business, and through his integrity, humility and dedication, he earned the confidence of the student body and was subsequently elected President of the Technical University of Mombasa Students Association (TUMSA) for the 2023/2024 academic year.

As TUMSA President, Beast exemplified servant leadership at its finest. He was approachable, dependable and solution-oriented, always placing the welfare of students above personal interests. He cultivated a culture of dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration between students and the University administration, believing that lasting solutions were achieved through engagement rather than confrontation. His calm disposition, maturity in handling complex issues and commitment to peaceful coexistence earned him the admiration and respect of students, staff and the wider University community.

His leadership was not confined to the office he held. Beast was deeply passionate about supporting students facing financial hardship. He tirelessly sought scholarships, sponsorships and well-wishers for needy students, personally following up to ensure deserving students received assistance. He generously offered guidance to those facing academic and personal challenges and remained a dependable source of encouragement to many who sought his counsel.

Even after graduating, Beast never severed his bond with the University. He continued mentoring students and fellow graduates, using his extensive professional and personal networks to connect young people with employment and business opportunities. He firmly believed that success was meaningful only when shared, and he dedicated much of his time to opening doors for others.

Beyond student leadership, Beast was an entrepreneur who successfully operated a beauty business, demonstrating resilience, innovation and the importance of self-reliance. He inspired many young people to embrace entrepreneurship while continuously encouraging others to pursue excellence in both their academic and professional lives.

His trademark phrase, "Comrades must enjoy," was more than a popular slogan, it reflected his philosophy that leadership should not only address students' challenges but also create a vibrant, inclusive and enjoyable university experience. Through his warmth, humour and generosity, he brought people together and built lasting friendships across the University community.

Although his life was cut tragically short, Elvis "Beast" Otieno leaves behind an enduring legacy of servant leadership, integrity, compassion and hope. His influence is reflected in the countless students whose education he supported, the graduates whose careers he helped launch, the friendships he nurtured and the lives he transformed through his kindness and generosity. He demonstrated that true leadership is not measured by power or position but by one's willingness to serve, uplift and empower others.

Beast passed away on the night of 20th July 2026 after collapsing during a meeting with his colleagues. His passing has plunged the Technical University of Mombasa community into mourning. While his earthly journey has come to an end, his remarkable legacy of selfless service, humility, courage and unwavering commitment to humanity will continue to inspire generations of students and leaders.

The Technical University of Mombasa extends its deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, former classmates, fellow student leaders, colleagues and the entire University fraternity during this difficult time. We pray that Almighty God grants them strength, comfort and peace as they mourn this irreplaceable loss.
