TUM’s Arafat Mukasa won Kshs 500,000 and other goodies in the Wazo Prize 2016

Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) was well represented in the Wazo (ideas) prize 2016.Arafat Mukasa a second year bachelor degree student in Medical Engineering was awarded a certificate, trophy  and cash prize of kshs 500,000/=  in a colourful award ceremony which was held on 6th April 2016 at the Safari park hotel in Nairobi.

 

 

The competition attracted 115 applicants across the globe and Mukasa was among the top 13 candidates who were shortlisted as winners.

Arafat presented a project dubbed MOBIAAS (mobile agro-meteorological advisory service). This is a mobile technology platform that provides comprehensive agro meteorological advisory services to poor and vulnerable communities, households, and individuals comprising of the poor, women, elderly, and those at risk of climatic change and extreme climatic conditions such as floods, diseases, drought, and landslides.

 

 

The platform acquires meteorological information from various sources using multi-model ensemble technique. The information is aggregated, organized, and analysed by an algorithm and a multi-disciplinary team. It is then sent out to the subscribed users in the form of data that is simple and comprehendible to enable users to make informed decisions.

Wazo award is an annually event which is  organized by Climate Information Prize (CIP) which is funded by UK Aid. It works in partnership with the Kenya Meteorological Department. CIP awards cash prizes to entrepreneurs and innovators who come up with new solutions that use climate information in some way to supports vulnerable individuals, households and communities in Kenya

 

Winning solutions enable vulnerable individuals and households to access products and services that make use of climate information, in order to better tackle climate uncertainty and risk.
