The 1st Mombasa Techbridge Challenge

This was a one week workshop hosted by the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) in collaboration with a Norwegian based company Eyasys and ZoomIT from Kenya. The competition was open to only former and current students of TUM.

 

A total of 7 groups, each with 4 students participated in the Competition, where the first, second and third group took home Kshs 50,000/= , 30,000/= and 20,000/= respectively. Apart from cash, the wining teams were also given trophies.

Group one which was lead by Arafat Mukasa from Medical Engineering had a project on health care tracking unit for patients with Epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease. Group two under Shadrak Kiprotich from Electrical Engineering had a project on low cost solar system for homes and small businesses based on rental payment model. Group three which was lead by Christine Njiru from Applied Sciences presented a project dubbed, Mobile shopping application.

The colourful event was presided over by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics Research and Extension (ARE) Prof. Laila Abubakar who thanked Eyasys team for selecting TUM among other institutions of higher learning in Kenya to hold the competition. She urged all students to take those opportunities seriously as they come rarely in a life time. 

“The main focus should not be winning, rather acquiring the knowledge, skills, and exposure that will be helpful in the entrepreneurial journey.’’ Prof Laila said.

In his presentation the Eyasys Chief Executive Officer -President Mr. Oyvind Rideng commended the TUM management for the support and cooperation that made the event successful. He advised students to take the challenges in developing nations as opportunities in the Information Technology (IT) world.

Other innovation ideas included; Electronic lecturer evaluation system, Solar powered egg incubator, Flexible solar panel and Small business development around solar technology.

 

Among those who participated in the event were: Director of Business in Eyasys Company Mrs.Froydis Archer, Eyasys East Africa Director Mrs. Tone Faugli, Director IRIE Dr.Saeed Mwaguni, Deputy Director IRIE Mr.Daniel Mwaringa, Dean Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Susan Bosire and Director ICT, Mr. Obadiah Musau.

    This was a great opportunity! I learnt a lot about entrepreneurship and had a good experience developing my first business plan!!! Team work was awesome too. Thumbs up to Eyasys, TUM and ZoomIT. Looking forward to start ups from our innovations
