Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Department has existed since the inception of the then MIOME later renamed Mombasa Technical Institute, Then Mombasa Polytechnic in 1972, The Mombasa Polytechnic University College in 2008 and finally Technical University of Mombasa after being given Charter to operate as a full-fledged public university.

The department initially offered craft courses in mechanical engineering, graduating to technician courses in its early formative stage. The department currently offers Certificate and Diploma courses in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering and Chemical Engineering as well as BSc. degree in Mechanical engineering. The department also offers tailor made short courses, seminars and research activities in collaboration with our industrial partners.

Plans are under way of expanding to offer other Engineering degree courses including Petroleum Engineering, Chemical and Processing Engineering as well as Mining and mineral processing engineering to fully address the current and future labour needs of the country and the region at large towards fulfillment of the vision 2030.

The department will also be offering post graduate programs in core mechanical engineering disciplines. Our training programs emphasize on imparting practical skills to our students through vigorous practical sessions in workshops and laboratories as well industrial attachments to expose them to work environment and prepare them fully to offer solutions to challenges in the industry.

The department is equipped with the state of the art training facilities including simulators and CNC (computer numerically controlled) machines as well computers with broad band internet access for research and training.
