TUM’s Marine engineering lecturer Captain Taleb Mohammed with Bandari college students during practical session at the marine engine simulator room.

“Marine engine simulator, waoooh! This is awesome we have been longing to see this machine.” These were sentiments made by Marine engineering students from Bandari College who visited TUM for practical session at the Marine engine simulator room on 20th July 2016. A group of 27 students from Bandari College participated in that session. TUM is the only institution of higher learning in East Africa which has the state of the art facility.

In an exclusive interview with corporate communications office, senior lecturer in Marine Engineering Captain Taleb Mohammed said that approximately 80% of maritime accidents are the result of human error.

“Simulation training, in a controlled environment, gives marine engineers the opportunity to learn, experiment and interact with a variety of realistic situations that would be dangerous or expensive to recreate in real life.” Captain Taleb emphasized.

According to Captain Taleb the main goal of studies in Marine engineering is to give students the basic professional knowledge and vocational skills to be able to safely control ship and production machinery.
